USDA ban on imported cattle affects Texas

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has for the last six weeks, banned Mexican cattle imports since November after a parasite known as screwwormwas discovered on a cow near Mexico’s border with Guatemala.
TxDOT crews driving snowplows or maintainers were kept busy last Thursday clearing snow off of highways, with snow falling faster than the clearing. Schools, county and city offices, medical centers and businesses were closing early due to winter storm conditions. While daytime temperatures have risen, there is a chance for snow on Saturday evening some areas of the Texas Panhandle. (Sheriff’s Office photo)

Sheriff’s Office urges preparations for freezing weather

Sheriff Sal Rivera is urging residents of the county to be prepared as extreme cold weather temperatures will be arriving this Saturday and are expected to last through Jan. 23.The Castro County Sheriff’s Office lobby will be open as a warming station beginning Jan. 18 at 6 p.m. through Jan.

Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar announced he will send cities, counties, transit systems and special purpose districts $1.1 billion in local sales tax allocations for January, 0.3 percent more than in January 2024.
Following in the footsteps of other past Nazareth Swiftettes basketball players, Brooklyn Birkenfeld signed her Letter of Intent to become a Wayland Baptist Flying Queen this past Wednesday. She was joined by her family, teammates, NISD students, as well as Swiftettes Coach Eric Schilling and Flying Queen Coach Jason Cooper who has led the Wayland team since 2021. Birkenfeld was key team member of the Swiftettes drive to win state in 2022-23.
