Two arrested for injuring 10-month-old baby

Two individuals were arrested last Thursday and charged with injuring a 10month baby girl. According to court documents, McLayne Hall, 28, and Cotton Nicole Newbrough, 24, were arrested and taken into custody.

Justice Department sues Texas over floating barrier

The U.S. Justice Department announced it is suing Texas and Gov. Greg Abbott after the state declined to remove the floating barrier deployed on the Rio Grande near Eagle Pass. The lawsuit was filed in an Austin federal court and alleges the barrier was installed without authorization from the U.S.

Wolfforth man pleads guilty in death of son

A Wolfforth man has been sentenced to 50 years in prison after pleading guilty to aggravated assault in the 2021 death of his 3-monthold son. On Nov. 21, Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office responded to residence in Wolfforth where they found the baby, Benjamin Ortega, in cardiac arrest.

DISD approves waiver, proposals

The Dimmitt ISD trustees held their regular meeting on July 10, hearing reports from the superintendent and approving contracts as the new school year approaches.

Bethel Chicken Fry set for Aug. 10

The annual Bethel Community Chicken Fry is on the calendar for Aug. 10. The popular community event will be held at Greg Sides’ house at 1905 FM 1524 and will begin at 7 p.m. Attendees should bring lawn chairs and a side dish or dessert that evening.

Chamber golf tourney kicks off Aug. 12

The Dimmitt Chamber of Commerce will be holding its annual golf tournament on Aug. 12. The 4-person scramble will be held at Dimmitt Recreation, with ball drop at 9:30 a.m. and tee time at 10 a.m.

Abbott signs off on property tax cuts

Gov. Greg Abbott signed an $18 billion tax cut for Texas property owners, sending the proposals to voters for their approval later this year. The package puts $12.

HTFCU has grand opening

After breaking ground in August 2022, Hereford Texas Federal Credit Union held its grand opening and officially opened their doors for business at their new location at 200 N Broadway last Tuesday in Dimmitt.
