‘Won’t you be my neighbor?’ (Fred Rogers) I grew up in the small rural neighborhood of Mycenae, NY. Many of my best friends were children in the neighborhood. We went to school together; played and ate together. I stayed overnight at their homes, and they spent nights with me.

Castro County 4-H/District 2 youth have the opportunity to attend the Fishing Extravaganza set for June 30 at Buddy Holly Park in Lubbock. The event is for 4-H members who have completed K-12 grades. Clover kids can enter for awards or fish for free. Check-in is at 3 p.m.; orientation, 3:30 p.m.

Children who have completed first through fifth grade will have unique opportunities for summer activities through Texas Tech University’s National Ranching Heritage Center (NRHC). The Summer Youth Classes will run from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. June 13-17.

Forecasters at NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center, a division of the National Weather Service, are predicting above-average hurricane activity this year — which would make it the seventh consecutive above-average hurricane season.

DISD announces staff changes

The 2022-23 DISD school year will bring some changes to staffing, both in administration and coaching. Maritssa Flores will be relocating from the Richardson Elementary campus to become the Dimmitt High School principal.

Texas A&M AgriLife announces move

Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center of Amarillo will move to Canyon to complete an agricultural research, education and outreach powerhouse on the West Texas A&M University campus. Funding for the new, $30 million center was approved May 19 by The Texas A&M University Board of Regents.
