Charlotte Florence Thurman, 91, of Plainview, TX, passed away on July 13, 2026. A visitation will be held on Thursday, July 16, 2026 from 5:00P.M. 7:00P.M. at Kornerstone Funeral Directors. In accordance with the family’s wishes, a private graveside will be held.
Born February 4, 1935 in Wichita, Kansas, Charlotte Thurman was the third child of Ivan E. and Margaret (Gerteis) Wimp, who moved to Texas in 1928 parents.
Charlotte grew up on the family farm, attending the small rural school, Price, in the Whitfield Community. Her father bought a home in Plainview in 1945 and she began school in the 5th grade at Highland. She graduated from Plainview High School in 1952 and attended Lippert’s Business College.
She married Elie Elgin “Buddy” Thurman at her parent’s farm home on November 12, 1952. His grandfather, A.F. Thurman, a Church of Christ Minister from Electra, performed the ceremony. They had almost 48 years together before his untimely death in 2000.
She worked for AVC variety store and also for Paymaster Cotton Gin in Aiken. She began working for the Plainview Daily Herald in 1956 as a typesetter punching tape for the linotype. Later she was a proofreader, secretary, obituary writer and conducted tours for school children through the Herald, retiring in 2006 after 50 years. She received a 50-year plaque from the Associated Press. She worked in all departments except sales and press and for three editors Herb Hilburn, Jim Servatius and Danny Andrews and saw the printing industry go from hot lead process to computer operations.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church for over 60 years, the West Texas Car club and was a Ham Radio operator, WA5MIQ, and the West Texas Amateur Radio Club when it was in operation. She worked as a volunteer for several years after retiring, leading aerobics at the Senior Citizens Center and delivering Meals on Wheels.
She loved animals, especially horses, cats and dogs, and always had horses. She rode with the Bar None Drill team for 17 years, participating in quadrilles at the local rodeo and rode in rodeo parades in area towns. She and her husband also rode motorcycles and enjoyed flying in his Citabria. She traveled extensively in Europe, and to most of the 50 states in the U.S., and went on several cruises.
Survivors include her children, Don E. and wife, Cynthia Thurman and Carla and husband Doug Edwards, all of Plainview; a granddaughter Kimber and husband Jody Maietta of Palm Bay, Fla.; grandson Ryan Corbin-Edwards and husband Jake Corbin-Edwards of San Antonio; sister, Marguerite W. Richmond of Gig Harbor, Wash.; two great-granddaughters, Alana Hatfield Rubio and husband, Danny and Kaylie Hatfield; a sister-in-law, Sue H. Wimp; several nieces and nephews and a host of life-long friends. She was affectionately known as Nama to her family.
Those deceased include her husband in 2000; father in 1980 and mother in 1998; and her brother, Ivan Gerteis Wimp in 2011 and an aunt, Pernie Wimp Bass. Also her brother-in-law, Charles A. Richmond; her mother- in-law, Edith Ledbetter Thurman McPherson and a sister-inlaw, Bettye Christine Thurman Winton.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Meals on Wheels, First UMC, or other charities of choice.
