Working from home

Luckily, I’ve got a little home office. It’s a place I can go sleep after my morning coffee. On Monday I had lots of time on my hands, so I took an online test to gauge my maturity level. It said I was “childish, obnoxious, and apathetic.” It said some other stuff, but I didn’t care.

April is recognized as National Heartworm Awareness Month as a reminder to protect our furry friends against heartworm disease before mosquito season peaks during the summer.

We are fortunate to have a Library Advisory Board here at Rhoads Memorial Library who dispenses wise words of wisdom when the occasion calls for it. The five-member board of volunteers is filled by three Dimmitt residents, one Hart resident, and one Nazareth resident.

School recess was the best

Do you remember elementary school recess? At our school, we ate lunch right before playtime. We’d line up single file to walk through the food line. The plate lunch often included gravy-laden mystery meat – beef or possibly bird – plus mashed potatoes and something green or yellow.

Texas Senate takes aim at internet content

The Texas Senate passed SB 2021 making it more difficult for children to access internet pornography by requiring users to verify their age. Senator Angela Paxton from McKinney stated that this content is especially malignant to the developing adolescent mind.

A salute to my dentists

Every morning when my mirror smiles back, I am grateful to two dentists who have helped me for decades. They must be darn good, because thanks to regular visits I’ve retained excellent cuspids, bicuspids, plus a host of workable molars. I am not the best patient.

This is an oldie - but a goodie. A young woman was about to finish her first year of college. Like so many others her age, she considered herself to be very liberal, and among other liberal ideals, was very much in favor of higher taxes to support more government programs.

Looking Back

Although some terrible viruses are around today, we’ve still got it better then folks who lived between the 5th and 15th centuries. Those were called the Middle Ages because surviving to 50 seemed impossible. Here’s the deal: if you were a nobleman, you could live well if you owned enough land.

Hippocrates wrote, in Of the Epidemics, “The physician must…. have two special objects in view with regard to disease, namely, to do good or to do no harm.” But it seems that the Texas Medical Board does not see it that way.
