Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor: I write this as a long-time Castro County resident, the retired editor of The Hart Beat/The Pulse and someone who would never have even considered voting for Donald Trump.

Baby Boomer television

I don’t sleep as much as I used to. Why? I watch television well past ten p.m. And after my mid-evening nap (about one hour), I can cruise show choices into the wee hours. I told my younger neighbor that when I had a child, I couldn’t watch late TV because – at midnight – the stations “signed off.

Editor’s Message

It is that time. Kids will be rolling out of bed after sleeping late all summer; trying to pick out the right shirt and stumbling in the early morning trying to remember when the vacation ended.

Abbott extends emergency SNAP benefits

Governor Greg Abbott and the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) is providing more than $305.5 million in emergency Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) food benefits for the month of August. The allotments are expected to help about 1.5 million Texas households.

(author unknown) A young woman was about to finish her first year of college. Like so many others her age, she considered herself to be very liberal, and among other liberal ideals, was very much in favor of higher taxes to support more government programs, in other words redistribution of wealth.

Learning to read

Do you remember the books you read in first grade? I sure do. And I fondly recall spelling tests, recess, flavored milk, and a girl name Lynne. I still drink flavored milk, but my wife tells me a recess with Lynne today is unacceptable.

Abraham Lincoln said, "If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time or die by suicide." He said that in 1838 warning that mobs or people who disrespected U.S. laws and courts could destroy the United States.

Impressive jobs

Whenever I’m at a business event, somebody brings up lousy jobs he had as a kid. I can relate. Personally, I’ve been canned more times than green beans. In high school, one of my classmates took a job kneading bread at a bakery. But he quit because he didn’t make enough dough.

Community Calendar July 28-30 Hart Days. Ms. Hart Pageant on Thursday evening. Friday/Saturday events include cornhole toss, horseshoe tournament, three-on-three basketball tourney. Saturday events: parade at 9 a.m. followed by car show; Outlaw Cook-off at noon; Burnout Contest at 2 p.m.
