Holy Smokes Barbecue from Friona held a fundraiser event on July 1 for the families of the young men recently killed or injured in car accidents. The event was held at the Castro County Courthouse Square and money received was divided among the families.

July 4th is upon us, and Rhoads Memorial Library is closed for the day to celebrate Independence Day. Normal hours of operation resume on Friday, July 5.

Circle the date and make your plans; July 4th will be a day of celebration, contemplation and dedication. Americans take a backward glance each year in remembrance and pride; ahead in humility and hope.Flags will line Main Street in rural villages, town squares, and store fronts.
The recent Terrific Tuesday saw a lot of fun activities at Rhoads Memorial Library. The featured book was The Good Egg, followed by making omelets in a bag, learning to make meringue from egg whites and making meringue cookies, making birdfeeders as a kindness activity. Twenty-three youth attended including those from 4-H. The program is led by Felice Acker, Castro County AgriLife Extension agent and runs until the end of July.

U.S. Supreme Court sends social media law back to lower court

The U.S. Supreme Court sent the legal challenge to a Texas social media law back to a lower court, sidestepping a landmark ruling for now.The legal battle centers on Texas’ law preventing large social media companies from censoring users’ content based on their political viewpoints.

Non-commercial vehicles to be exempt from inspections

Thanks to the passage of House Bill 3297 by the 88th Texas Legislature and signed by Governor Greg Abbott, the state vehicle inspections program has upcoming changes that will eliminate most vehicle safety inspections in January 2025.
